Here in Canada, the CRTC has legislated that your phone number is yours. When you change phone companies, you have a right to keep your number. The process is call "Porting". You need to submit a LOA or "Letter of Authority" in which you declare that the phone number is yours and you authorize it to be transfered to your new phone company

When you port your number over to us at HeliaVoice, we will issue you a temporary phone number. The time it takes to permanently move your phone number is 1 week or longer depending on your current phone company and your account. While your phone number is being ported, you can call-forward your calls to your new phone service using the temporary number we've assign you. • "I use SIPTalk for both my home office voice line and for my fax machine, and it works much better than my previous VoIP provider did. My fax machine is my business lifeline, so I can’t afford to use an unreliable service. In addition, I save about 50% over what I would be paying AT&T for the same two lines. "
